Jakarta Intensifies Mud Cleanup to Face Rainy Season

The Jakarta administration is collaborating to carry out the Gerebek Lumpur action (mud cleanup) program in five regions of Jakarta, which aims to prevent and reduce the impact of the rainy season.

On Wednesday (9/28), the Gerebek Lumpur is focused on Long Storage Agro Tourism Cilangkap, East Jakarta.

Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Agency Secretary, Dudi Gardesi revealed that the Gerebek Lumpur has been ongoing since Sunday (9/25) at Pluit Reservoir, North Jakarta.

The same action was also spotted at Cideng River, Central Jakarta on Monday (9/26); at Sekretaris River, West Jakarta on Tuesday (9/27); and at Pulo River, South Jakarta on Thursday (9/29).

"By doing so, we hoped that the community will feel and get the benefits directly, especially being helped in handling flood problems,' he expressed, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release, Wednesday (9/28).

He explained that as many as 400 personnel and nine excavators and dump trucks were alerted to Gerebek Lumpur in Long Storage Agro Tourism Cilangkap. It was realized in collaboration with Urban Village PPSU, East Jakarta Parks and City Forest Sub-agency, East Jakarta Bina Marga Sub-agency, Environment Agency (Water Body Cleanliness Implementation Unit), East Jakarta Regional Working Unit (UKPD), and community elements.

He added that the target volume of mud dredging in Long Storage Agro Wisata Cilangkap is 72,300 m3, with an implementation period of 109 calendar days until December 31, 2022.

The Cilangkap Agro Tourism Long Storage has a depth of 3.5 meters with the length of the dredged river reaching 630 meters. The dredged results would be disposed of in the Agro area.

"To prevent and reduce the impact of the rainy season in Jakarta, let's support, participate, and collaborate because the community's role is very important in this activity, it can start from the simplest, namely not littering and maintaining cleanliness around water channels," he concluded.
